The World Bank Realizes Those Protesters in Seattle Were Right

Witness the limits of a world-class education: the World Bank had a meeting to discuss the recent riots and revolutions in the Middle East. "Mon dieu!" they cried. "Poverty matters after all. And this whole time we have just been worrying about the overall economic growth. Those anti-World Bank protesters were right!"

Of course, during this meeting no World Bank employee mentioned the Battle of Seattle and the thousands of people who screamed the same idea at them over the course of a weekend. But, never mind. At the top, these things don't matter.

The topic of the meeting was economic policies that were within the purview of the World Bank, which naturally excluded the United States, as we are seen as not needing help from others. That is incorrect, but it save U.S. politicians the embarrassment of being called to account by onlookers.

The Huffington Post article did not connect the dots between the realization by policy-makers that on-the-ground poverty is just as problematic in the Middle East as it is here in the United States. And the natural inference that the kinds of political tumult being seen now in Egypt can also be seen here in the United States if the situation doesn't change.

The U.S. has always been branded as a very stable country, politically and economically. But, bit by bit, we have been sold a bill of goods dreaming about the original United States in a way that couldn't possibly have been the case. The result is more money for the powerful, more corruption, and less security for almost all Americans. The usefulness of this situation is that Americans must tolerate all kinds of inequities in the workplace, as we are desperate to keep our jobs. Not useful to us, of course. Useful to the corporate interests that own the media we all listen to in assessing the state of our lives.

Still, the party won't last. Americans can get angry, too. And they will.

Nothing on Major Police Action in Washington Post

How often does most of parkway and Massachusetts Avenue, NW get completely shut down due to police action? In the middle of the day, no less. Not often.

Yet, there is no word on the Washington Post web page on what was going on.

Does anyone have any idea?

Police Action on Rock Creek Parkway and Massachusetts Ave NW

Serious police/ambulance/fire action. Rock Creek Parkway shut down between P street and beyond Massachusetts Avenue exits. Massachusetts Avenue, NW is shut down from just below the National Cathedral until DuPont Circle. I had to loop around to the intersection of Wisconsin and Massachusetts to go south on to Wisconsin Avenue to get to Glover Park.

A Few Words About Marriage

A marriage counselor whose marriage failed wrote a piece for the Huffington Post.

She and her husband had sex three times in fifteen years. That's serious.

But aside from that, her big complaint is that he didn't read her books. Really? And he wore shoes on the white sofa and got shoe polish on it. She wept as she tried to clean it up. Are you kidding me?

She then goes into a litany of tricks she employed to get more from him. Has it occured to her that these are shallow, surface maneuvers that don't really address anything?

If your husband is a slob, don't get a white couch. In fact, I can't think of any circumstance where a white couch is good for anybody.

If you want to eat together, cook a meal for both of you and serve it together.

I can't believe she escalated a clean, white couch and reading her books to the level of divorce. Every writer needs a reader. Get someone else. My husband writes certain material and I can't read it. And if the topic is saving your marriage, and there are problems there, of course he would feel uncomfortable reading it.

I know I'm judging here. There's probably some awful stuff she didn't want to make public, right?

DuPont Human Trafficking Operation Shut Down

Spa Sky, formerly at 1215 Connecticut Avenue NW, was shut down by DC's Metro Police. The girls forced into prostitution have been arrested and those who ran the brothel are being sued civilly by the Attorney General.

When asked about alternatives to arresting the victims of human trafficking, Lieutenant Bryan F. Christian of the Narcotic and Special Investigations Division Prostitution Enforcement Unit explained, "We are law enforcement. If somebody's breaking the law, we have to arrest them."

Lieutenant Christian said, "We often work with the non-profit Polaris, who interviews these girls and tries to get them on to another track in life."

Econo-Girl is heartened by the awareness of law enforcement related to human trafficking, however criminal penalties should be assessed against the owners of the brother as well. They took girls from their families, lied to them about work, and beat and raped them into lives as prostitutes. The problem is more than just one brothel. It is the human trafficking system.

On March 15 in Silver Spring Maryland, a screening of The Big Uneasy will take place at the AFI Silver Theatre and Cultural Center. Get tickets here.

"I would first like to thank all of the residents of the District of Columbia who have supported my campaign over the past 90 days, and who are committed to joining me as I work to restore faith and integrity to our local government.

This week, DCBOEE ruled in our favor that the petition challenge of Mr. Vincent Orange be thrown out. On Wednesday, our legal counsel went before the DCBOEE to defend the challenge of Sekou Biddle on the grounds of improper filing.  According to the Rules and Regulation of the DCBOEE, all challenges must include the names, nominating petition sheets, and line numbers.  This was not done by Mr. Biddle; therefore, his challenge should not have been accepted by DCBOEE.  Both parties MUST abide by the requirements set by DCBOEE, including the challengers, in this case Mr. Biddle.  Anything less then strict enforcement of the requiremets of what defines a properly filed challenge would set in motion a precedent of disenfranchising qualified candidates and voters in a city short on Democracy.

It is clear by the names thrown off the challenges of both Mr. Vincent Orange and Mr. Sekou Biddle, that both candidates lack respect for the political process and that their combined efforts were nothing more than a political maneauver to waste taxpayers money and inundate an understaffed DCBOEE office.

At a time when residents of our hometown are questioning the ethical behavior of our government's leadership, it is important for our campaign to fight the challenges of candidates who have shown through their own actions they would do nothing to restore the public trust.  We vow to push forward and win our appeal of Mr. Biddle's challenge, and restore integrity to our District government.  See you on the campaign trail." READ ARTICLE AND DEFENSE BRIEF

Jerry Schaeffer Enables Human Trafficking

Local DC businessman Jerry Schaeffer knowingly rents office space to a brothel, Spa Sky, that is involved in human trafficking.

That's "slavery" to you and me.

The DC chapter of Stop Modern Slavery has started an online petition at Change.org to pressure Jerry Schaeffer into evicting these tenants.

You wouldn't think this would be a problem. If these tenants were dealing drugs, Jerry Schaeffer would have no hesitancy in evicting them. Perhaps he thinks slavery is more like illegal parking. And not just slavery, but forced prostitution.

Conveniently located at 1215 Connecticut Avenue, NW, Washington, DC, right near the business district, this brothel is not populated by volunteers.

Please call Spa Sky and ask them about it: phone:   202-887-8223.

Please call Walmart and tell them their brand is being associated with forced prostitution:

Human Trafficking in DuPont Circle at 1215 Connecticut Avenue NW

Trafficking happens here in Dupont Circle (Sign the petition)
Hello Everyone,
I hope you're having a great weekend. I just wanted to let you know that we have a unique opportunity as a community group to help close a Dupont Circle brothel that has been trafficking Asian women. As we seek to leverage our power as grassroots organization to advocate, signing the petition DC SMS-member Dan Brook created (see below) is a tangible way we can make a difference in our community. At the bottom of the petition, you can see signatures from people all over the U.S. who are united with us in this mission. Please take 15 seconds to sign - I just did!

Thanks,
--
Danielle WipperfurthLead OrganizerDC Stop Modern Slavery

Hi All:

DC SMS has posted its first ever petition on change.org telling
a prominent DC businessman, Jerry Schaeffer, to stop leasing his Dupont Circle
property to Spa Sky, an Asian massage parlor at 1215 Connecticut Avenue NW,
which has recently been confirmed by law enforcement to be a front for an
illegal brothel.  As many of you
already know Asian massage parlors are very often thinly veiled fronts for
commercial brothels and have been known to traffic women through a system of
debt bondage.  Also, as emphasized
at our last meetup by Jeanette Manning of the DC Attorney General's Office, getting
landlords to stop leasing to these brothels is a crucial strategy in
permanently closing them down.

So, if you can
spare just a minute, please let Mr. Schaeffer know that we as community members
will not tolerate landlords profiting indirectly from these illegitimate
businesses.

To sign on to the petition go to:

http://www.change.org/petitions/tell-prominent-washington-dc-landlord-to-stop-leasing-to-illegal-brothels?share_id=ThlgDxmrTH&pe=pce

Also, if
you have any questions about the petition or the case, please email me at
dan@stopmodernslavery.org

Thank you!

So You Didn't Have To Kill Three Thousand People After All

What a sad turn for al Qaida. Here they are, killing small children, decapitating reporters, and knocking over tall buildings with airplanes when it seems all that bloodshed was unnecessary. In fact, you might even say it was counterproductive as none of the targeted governments fell.

This reality demonstrates what I've always said, even when working in the Terrorism Center. Some people just want to kill and they find an excuse to behave that way. Their methodologies are exactly the kinds of things they would want to do without a cause to justify it.

Imagine their shame when everyone realizes mass murder was never really productive, as least not compared to starting a Facebook page and organizing middle class professionals to protest. OK, they have no shame and will just blame others as usual. Imagine the shame they should feel.

I always said, and it was never really popular with my fellow counter-terrorist analysts, that al Qaida could have achieved the same result with a hundred people lying down in front of Holland Tunnel. Traffic would have been stopped and no one would have died. They would have received massive media attention. They would have shut down the city.

Or, operatives could be infected with a vicious stomach flu that cause someone to vomit and have diarrhea for two weeks. Then they would board airplanes and cause the virus to spread through the vent system. Everyone who flew would get sick for a few weeks. That would hurt the travel industry and be the butt of mockery all over the world.

There are so many creative things you can do to get attention that don't involve killing people. So why would you? And then in the end be exposed as people who soullessly kill when it wasn't necessary.

Al Qaida just lost all it's credibility. And they did it to themselves. And let that be a note to ourselves as well. Widespread killing doesn't change peoples' minds.
