Remember Gulf War I? The first President Bush was raising a fuss about Saddam Hussein and his gassing of the Kurds. He doesn't adhere to the Geneva Conventions! He must be stopped! It was used as one of the reasons to go to war.
Now we as a nation have decided to, finally, follow the Geneva Convention once again. And when I write to support that new policy, all hell breaks loose. That's fine. Econo-Girl is sure she angered a lot of people, and what's the point of living if you're not going to do that once in a while?
But the whole time he was rallying support against Saddam Hussein, the first President Bush never suggested we become just like him. He had the sense not to go into Iraq to begin with. That old geezer is looking better all the time.

You can be glad that you got out when you did. Being associated with things that cannot be justified in any reasonable system of ethics is corrosive to your soul. Read about the guys who were involved with the longest known string of war crimes in the Vietnam war (Tiger Force a book by Salah and Weiss about the activities of a special unit of the 101st airborne in the Central Highlands of Vietnam) look it up on Amazon. Most of them died fairly young (50s) from complications arising from PTSD and perhaps Agent Orange as well. Lots of drug addiction, alcoholism (PTSD) and cancer (Agent Orange. There is no escape from your actions. You are very lucky you were kicked out of their. You might not have been able to leave on your own. It's very easy to feel trapped in a bad situation.
You have to know the reality of the situation. Bush does NOT want to have to follow any international agreements. The press secretary (which is now the entire on air staff of Fox News - not just Tony Snow) have said many times that "the supreme court just made it harder to fight terror".
So there will be a push to legalize all the stuff the supreme court had objections to.
And it is good to know that Saddam and Alberto Gonzalez have something in common!
Contradictions. During the 2004 election, GWB defended the civilian carnage in Iraq on the grounds that he was taking lives in order to save lives. Minutes later he explained his opposition to stem cell research because it would be taking life to save lives - which is utterly unacceptable to him! How did he get away with it, on networked national TV as he was? Perhaps the peculiar sideways walk (c.f. Right Said Fred, 1990) that he was performing at the time confused the voters...
