A recent widower, his wife assassinated, the new President of Pakistan apparantly is an admirer of Gov. Palin.
"You are more gorgeous than you are on [television]," he told Palin after she declared that she was honored to meet him. "Now I know why the whole of America is crazy about you," Zardari added, flashing his trademark teeth-baring smile. (From TIME magazine. Click on title of post to see full article.)
It seems Pakistani feminists are outraged. But really, is it so bad? He was flirting with a potential U.S. leader. So what? As women enter the field of world leadership, isn't flirtation part of the communication repertoire? I think it should be.
I can see my husband saying something like this. He says things like this to every woman that moves, especially the old ones. And they love it. "O-o-ohh!" they squeal with delight, clap their hands, and even jump up and down. When we shop in upper northwest DC, he goes up to obvious 40-something women with babies and says, "the au pairs are getting younger and younger every year" and - without fail - they giggle and say "I'm the mother!"
So a little flirting to grease the wheels of international relationships isn't a bad thing at all. Didn't Thatcher and Pinochet have a little thing going on like that? Maybe not the best example, but you get the point.

Mexico, Texas and the Death Penalty
I want everybody in Texas to stop for a moment and just feel good about themselves. Breathe deeply and think of your sense of outrage and corresponding superiority. Think of your penchant for killing people. Dwell there a moment, because it won't last.
If the state of Texas is going to insist on killing a Mexican citizen while ignoring his right to contact his government for help, Texans need to prepare for something: that Mexico is going to do the same to you.
As excited as you are about another dead human being, you will be outraged that a Texan will be sentenced to life in prison without access to a Consular representative from the U.S. Embassy in Mexico. And all those feelings you have right now will be had by Mexican citizens, and the outrage will be yours.

Clinton and Obama - Talking to the Enemy
Clinton accuses Obama of being naive because he is willing to talk to nations like Cuba, North Korea and Iran if he gets elected President. She is wrong. Having a list of countries with problematic behavior and refusing to talk to them about it means conducting communications through the press and third parties. You will always have to have communications. It's just a matter of how.
Look at this Administration. They are finally talking to Iran. They had to. If there was ever a group of people invested in not talking to Iran, it would be this Administration. But essential discussions needed to be had, and you should have thought of that when you decided to invade the country next to Iran. So now you have to talk to them.

Iran's Hostage Strategy Worked
So now the truth is shook out. Iran took the British hostages so they could get their diplomats back. You may recall that the U.S. stormed an Iranian diplomatic facility and took some 'diplomats' as captives.
Well, what's good for the goose is good for the gander. So Iran seized British marines and held them without access to British embassy officials. Just like the U.S. did to the Iranian diplomats. Then, after the U.S. released a diplomat and allowed Iranian officials to visit the other ones, the British marines were released.
So you get the point now, President Bush? Or do you need a picture? If you throw beer in someone's face, be prepared to have beer thrown back in yours.
Econo-Girl has always said that the Iranians are neither stupid nor crazy.
